Genie Cable & Drum Replacement: The Denton Owner’s Guide

If your Genie garage door cable has snapped or the drum is worn, you’re looking at an installed replacement cost of $130-$250 here in Denton, and we stock Genie-compatible cables and drums on the truck for same-day repair in most cases. You’ll usually spot the problem before the door fully quits: a frayed cable dangling loose, a door hanging crooked on one side, or a grinding sound when the door moves. We also replace the drum in pairs, even when only one shows wear, because a mismatched pair pulls your door off-level. Name the part. Quote the range. Do the work.

We’re an independent Denton garage door company, not a Genie dealer or affiliate, which means we match your existing hardware and quote a written price before touching a bolt. We also carry LiftMaster and Chamberlain cables and drums for households with mixed hardware.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

The cable-and-drum system on a Genie door lives above the door opening, on the torsion tube. The drum is the grooved spool at each end that winds and unwinds the lifting cable. If your door runs on a torsion spring, it runs on drums, and that covers nearly every Genie residential door sold in the last 25 years: the IntelliG, ReliaG, TriloG, and Classic series, plus the builder-grade Pro series lines found in Denton’s 2015-2025 construction in neighborhoods like Hickory Creek and Corinth.

Here’s the Genie-specific gotcha. Genie has used two drum profiles over the years: the older 4-inch tapered drums on doors built before roughly 2010, and the newer 400-48 style drums with a different groove pitch on doors after that. The cable seat depth differs by about 1/8 inch. It’s enough that a drum that looks identical from the ground will bind or throw the cable after a dozen cycles. We check the drum length and groove pitch against the door’s spring and cable size before quoting anything.

OEM vs. aftermarket, in plain terms: Genie’s OEM cables are good, but we stock a USA-made aftermarket equivalent in the same 7×19 strand construction, which matters because 7×19 is more flexible and holds up better against the start-stop bending at the drum. We’ll install Genie OEM if your door is under warranty. If it’s not, we’ll quote the aftermarket equivalent and label it on the invoice. You’ll see the actual part before we install it, per Clause 4 of The Haven Standard.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • The door hangs visibly crooked in the opening. One cable has stretched or started to fray, so that side is lifting slower. Pushing the opener to keep working this way pulls the other cable taut and accelerates the failure.
  • A frayed or unraveling cable near the drum. Denton’s dry summer air and the fine dust it carries settle into the cable strands, acting like sandpaper as the cable winds. If you see broken wire strands, the cable is already on borrowed time.
  • A loud pop, then the door slams to one side. That’s the sound of a cable snapping under load. The door is now supported unevenly and you should stop using it immediately and call us.
  • A grinding or scraping noise near the top of the door. A drum with a worn groove will pull the cable off-track, causing the cable to drag against the drum flange or the bracket. The noise is the cable sawing through its own strand.
  • The door jerks or shudders partway up. Cables that no longer seat evenly in the drum cause sudden release-and-grab motion. It’s hard on the door and it’s hard on the opener.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Denton, Genie cable and drum replacement runs $130-$250 installed. Cables alone typically land at the lower end of that range; adding drums pushes toward the middle and high end. If the spring has also failed (common in Texas, where heat accelerates metal fatigue), spring repair adds $180-$340, and we’ll explain exactly why both need attention before we touch anything.

What’s included in the price, every time: the Genie-compatible cables or drums, installation, a load test on the opener, and a documented photo record of what we removed and what we installed. We quote a flat, written price before any work starts, per Clause 1 of The Haven Standard. The price does not change once we’re on the job. What we quote is what you pay.

All repair work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cable or drum fails because we didn’t install it right, we fix it at no cost. If a competitor gave you a written estimate, bring it in and we’ll give you a free second opinion with our own set of eyes and measurements.

This is the part where we’re honest with you, because anyone who’s seen a torsion spring let go knows exactly why we lead with this: replacing a Genie cable and drum means working inches from a spring under enough tension to cause serious injury or death if it releases. That’s not a scare tactic. It’s a physics fact. The spring stores all the lifting force; the cables and drums are what transfer it to the door.

What you can safely do: visually check the cables for fraying, listen for that grinding sound, and note which side is sagging. What you should not do: attempt to remove the cable or drum yourself, because releasing tension from the torsion system without the right winding bars and procedure is how people end up in the ER.

We’ll show up, identify the failed part, photograph it, quote the range in writing, and have the door running right. Call (940) 398-6880 and we’ll get you on the schedule.
